What are the limits of “expanded kinship” frameworks in response to the crisis of the private nuclear household? Instead of valuing the aspirational treatment of all people “as family”—after all, families are the number one location for rape, abuse, and murder—Lewis will speculate that, in the post-familial communes of a possible human future, we might value most highly, in our everyday metaphors, the acts of (xeno-)hospitality and solidarity that are owed to strangers.

Dr Sophie Lewis (they/she) is an independent scholar and former human geographer living in Philadelphia. Their books include: Full Surrogacy Now, Abolish the Family, and Enemy Feminisms.
