Khensani Jurczok-de Klerk (she/her) is an architect from Johannesburg (SA). She is the founder of Matri-Archi(tecture) and a doctoral fellow at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) ETH Zürich. 

Maria Conen (she/her) co-founded Conen Sigl Architekt:innen in Zurich and is a Professor at ETH Zurich, focusing on housing and adaptive reuse of habitats and architecture.

Oliver Lütjens (he/him), born 1972, co-founded Lütjens Padmanabhan Architects, focusing largely on housing projects in Switzerland. He teaches architecture at ETH Zürich and Harvard.

During this seminar week, together with the students of A2 Studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM), we will imagine, design, and build a kitchen to empower non-normative bodies and invite diverse communities to cook collectively.
Over the last decades, collective cooking has been actively and increasingly practised by different social groups to build solidarity and resilience. Various groups have incubated and shaped forms of alternative kinship outside prevailing power structures, where pleasure, nourishment, and memories are cultivated. The kitchen can become an urban infrastructure for care, as a means to improve quality of life and support more resilient urban communities for the city of Prague.
Meanwhile, it can be argued that our vision of the kitchen is still very much based on the domestic typology, mostly devised for one-person cooking, and which does not recognise the non-conforming body.
To transgress the normative kitchen, we will envision anti-ageist rela-tionalities, crip behaviours, cultural diversity, and disruptive cooking practices through a design-build workshop.
We will be paired with UMPRUM students and work collectively in groups for the design-build task. We will visit a variety of architectural precedents, and meet with architects, activists, and political agents.
The course is structured and will be accompanied by the Chair of Architecture and Care (Anna Puigjaner, Dafni Retzepi, and He Shen together with Ethel Baraona Pohl, Lisa Maillard, and Pol Esteve Castelló) and the A2 Studio team at UMPRUM (Eva Franch i Gilabert, Katerina Videnová, and Albeta Bruhová).

Urban Kitchen

Architects have long been complicit in the ‘othering’ of older people, perpetuating a state of spatial ageism that strips older people of their complexity and agency. In this lecture, Mark will explore the different ways that architects have conceptualised older people - as patient, customer and citizen - reflecting on his current research with older housing activists in Manchester, UK. He will explore how older people have responded to issues of gentrification and austerity through creativity, performance and protest, and how the group co-produced vision of a new type of ‘retirement community’ grounded in joy, inclusion and collective action.

Mark Hammond (he/him) is a Senior Lecturer at Manchester School of Architecture. His research focuses on the intersections between architecture and urban ageing within the home, community and city, with a specific interest in housing inequality and spatial justice.

Designing for Ageing, Agency and Activism

Can cooperative housing be seen as a commons, in isolation from state and market forces? If so, how do we reconcile the active roles of institutions and developers at the various stages of Zurich's cooperative history? In comparing the long-established cooperatives, which historically catered for nuclear families, with the recent, ideologically active cooperatives, which embrace alternative forms of social and multi-generational organisation, this paper hypotheses an original understanding of Zurich's housing cooperative as a hybrid commons. 

Irina Davidovici (she/her) is the Director of the gta Archive and led the gta Doctoral Programme from 2019 to 2021. Her research straddles the history of recent Swiss architecture and housing studies, with a focus on urban estates, cooperatives, and collective living.

Cooperative Housing in Zurich

Caring has not a place, it occurs everywhere from the considered private interior to the city. From a gender perspective we realise that caring for others is the cause of inequity. The way public policies, programs and spaces are organised is fundamental for a more equal society.

Interscalar Care: from the house to the city

If ageism is addressed at all, it is often approached as affecting older people and elderly only. But ageism concerns all of us: everyone is assigned an age at birth. Against Ageism: A Queer Manifesto refuses to fight ageism by reproducing capitalist arguments of value and heterosexual notions of linear time. Van Saarloos starts with an experience of childhood sexual abuse, and moves on to dissect the ways in which constructions of “age” and “youth” function to support and reproduce white supremacist patriarchy. With the help of the Architecture and Care department, what kinds of anti-ageist living condition can we imagine?

iLiana Fokianaki (she/her) is a curator, theorist and educator and the designated new director of Kunsthalle Bern (starting spring 2024). Her research focuses on formations of power and how they manifest under the influence of geopolitics, national identity and cultural and anthropological histories, with a specific research trajectory on the ethics and politics of care, in times of climate catastrophe.

FS24 STUDIO INTERIM REVIEW I

Books have been an essential tool to understand the world we inhabit in its wider context. The words we use, the many languages in which we communicate create a framework where the past, present and possible futures collide. And within this framework, one of the most radical ways of embracing otherness and learning to respectfully listen to other voices is by reading  together. By reading aloud together we allow the configuration of new kinds of spaces where empathy, otherness and alterity prove stronger than ideologies. 

By selecting readings that dismantle binary understandings of society—and the world at large—a reader will be assembled and distributed through the participants. Texts gathered in the reader are read aloud by participants, intended to provoke a contagion of knowledge by learning not only from the contents, but from the nuances, the accents, and the cadence of the different voices.

Julien Lafontaine Carboni (they/them, she/her) is an architect, educator and researcher crafting queer and trans* theories of architecture through fleshy, oral and embodied infrastructure of knowledge transmission.

Phila Bergmann (no pronoun/they/them) works as a curator, artist, social justice trainer, teacher and researcher in the field of visual art and performance. Phila has been co-director and curator of Shedhalle Zurich since 2020.

M. E. O’Brien will explore the tensions between utopian socialism and Marxism in family abolitionist thinking, identifying in mass protests moments of supersession of the private household.

M. E. O’Brien (she/her) writes on gender, freedom and capitalism. She recently published the book Family Abolition: Capitalism and the Communizing of Care (Pluto, 2023). She serves on the editorial board of the magazines Pinko and Parapraxis. O’Brien coordinated the New York City Trans Oral History Project. She teaches queer studies at NYU.

The architectural discipline has constructed, under the umbrella of an alleged “normality”, a spatial regime that is unequal. From the perspective of non-conforming bodies and acknowledging the intersectional condition of the self, this lecture will present transgressions of heteronormative configurations of collective living and will introduce Care. a new research and educational project launched in 2023 in the Department of Architecture at ETH Zürich, that promotes new forms of interdependent care through design and theory.

Orlando, My Political Biography is a 2023 French documentary film directed by Paul B. Preciado. The director expands Virginia Woolf's novel Orlando: A Biography, in which the main character changes gender midway through the story to become a 36-year-old woman. He organises a casting and brings together 26 contemporary trans and non-binary people, aged between 8 and 70, to play Orlando. 
Almost a century after the book was published, Paul B. Preciado tells Virginia Woolf that her fictional character is now the root of all non-binary bodies.

The talk will present an overview of the key aspects of ongoing research, advocacy, and activism around reproductive healthcare access in the United States of America. Including projects both prior and following the Supreme Court Dobbs decision that overturned the federal guarantee to abortion, rendering abortion illegal across various states in the country. I will discuss opportunities to intervene in law, policy, and the built environment.

Lori A. Brown, AIA Fellow, is a Distinguished Professor of architecture as well as a practitioner. Her work is rooted in feminist methodologies in the built environment.

The modern apartment is the index of a process that constructed the nuclear family as the “natural” unit of Western society. This talk traces the genealogy through which the dwelling was scripted into a diagram of asymmetric relationships, separating production from reproduction and crystallising power hierarchies. Intimacy and love have been forced into a rigid heteronormative pattern, but is architecture ultimately the real villain in this ongoing story?

HS23 STUDIO INTERIM CRIT I

The documentary Where We Grow Older  (CCA, 2023) looks at how the growing ageing population reshapes architectural and social constructs, questioning the role of urban design and politics in facing these challenges. It investigates two models for the reconception of care in light of prolonged lives: public housing and an architectural model offering care in a single building to both the elderly and their caretakers. Followed by a discussion with Giovanna Borasi and Daniel Schwartz.

Daniel Schwartz is a visual storyteller from and based in Atlanta. His work often focuses on cities, politics, and the relationship between people and place. He is the director of the three-part documentary series produced by the CCA.

Giovanna Borasi is Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture since 2020. She first joined the CCA as Curator for Contemporary Architecture in 2005. Borasi was educated in architecture, and has worked as a writer and editor in addition to her curatorial activities.
