Cultural Core
This project envisions a community space near Helvetiaplatz, addressing the evolving needs of the Kurdish diaspora through a multifunctional cultural core. Grounded in the experiences of Kurds living in Zurich, it seeks to create an inclusive environment that fosters connection, cultural expression, and intergenerational dialogue.
Drawing inspiration from Karosh Taha’s novel The Belly of the Queen, which explores themes of identity and belonging within the Kurdish diaspora, the project recognizes the diverse experiences of different generations. As approximately 10,000 Kurds reside in Zurich, their well-organised clubs and associations advocate for their rights and cultural recognition. Helvetiaplatz is central to their political struggle for freedom and self-determination, making it vital to create spaces that facilitate cultural expression and education. Through interviews with members of the Kurdish Culture Association DEM-KURD, we gained insights into the community's spatial and programmatic demands, emphasising the importance of accommodating intergenerational relationships with Kurdish heritage.
The design takes shape within the existing, unused building at Brauerstrasse 16, which offers an adaptable framework for various cultural and communal activities. The architectural concept introduces a multifunctional cultural core, which extends its functions into individual rooms, effectively determining their usage. Key elements include extendable room partitions, foldable facades, and flexible furniture, all of which enhance the adaptability of the space. This modular system allows for adjustments in response to the community's changing needs over time, facilitating both indoor and outdoor interactions.
The proposed community space invites openness and accessibility, characterised by large windows and signs that show its connection to Kurdish culture. Inside, visitors can enjoy a welcoming atmosphere filled with images of Kurdistan, traditional music, and opportunities for dialogue. By fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, the design aims to strengthen community ties, celebrate cultural heritage, and create a vibrant hub for the Kurdish diaspora in Zurich.
