Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis addresses the future of the alpine regions of Valais in light of climate change. Using Verbier as a case study and critically engaging with the legacy of the ski industry, the project advocates for the cultural re-appropriation of its architectural infrastructure. By listening to the landscapes, their inhabitants, and their myths, the project proposes a disruptive reading and transformation of the territory, encompassing its built, unbuilt, and imaginary spaces.

The cable car stations are recognized as monsters — heterogeneous in form, material, and function. These stations, once thriving forces of the mountain's capitalization and ultimate symbols of tourism, are deeply embedded in both the imaginary and physical landscape of the region. Envisioning the future of these spaces beyond their current state requires breaking free from the stickiness of tourism that entraps people and places. Therefore, the project seeks to disrupt the monocultural imaginations of tourism and radically explore the possibility of an end, embracing the ideas of closure and renouncement.

What would happen if we stop?

What is already happening?

What does it mean to live with and to live without?

What can we learn from the fabulous beings?

The observation drawings bear witness to the situations and processes witnessed on the site. Slightly diverging from reality, these moments unveil the inherent dynamism of all matter. Drawing them meticulously brings attention to their potential, decay, and monstrous essence. The deconstruction drawings meticulously analyze the architectural structure of the stations. Through deconstruction, spaces undergo transformation in terms of their shape, influence on the landscape, accessibility, ownership, and use.

The agents are the various forces, actors, and elements existing within the territory. Whether it's artificial snow, water, wind, cattle, humans, moss, or plants, each possesses agency and the capability to interact with one another. These agents initiate processes and encourage cross-species interactions, shaping dynamic relationships within the territory.
