Let's Talk about Abortion
The book Elena Knows by Claudia Piñero explores abortion, a subject hidden in Argentina until its legalisation in 2007. Inspired by this film, the proposed facility provides a diverse neighbourhood with information on abortion and a supportive space for those undergoing the procedure. By addressing this topic openly, it destigmatized a practice often shrouded in secrecy and fosters conversations about reproductive health.
In Switzerland, where abortion has been legal since 2002, the topic remains a taboo, especially in Kreis 4. A survey we undertook revealed that many feel shame or fear discussing abortion, demonstrating the need for visibility and accessibility. The facility’s location at Molkenstrasse 20, near Helvetiaplatz and Langstrasse, ensures high visibility and accessibility through foot traffic and public transport. By repurposing an existing building, the design creates an inviting atmosphere with open spaces that enhance light and connectivity.
Visitors enter through a welcoming, well-lit café on the ground floor, designed to foster social interaction. The first floor hosts workshop areas for discussions and activities related to reproductive health. The second floor is dedicated to a gynaecology clinic, offering a private and professional space for consultations and procedures. Above, a restful area provides comfort for patients recovering post-procedure, alongside staff facilities. The top floor includes private recovery rooms, allowing for extended care or medical abortions in a supportive, safe setting
The building’s design balances public and private needs by arranging rooms that transition from street-facing public programs to quieter, intimate spaces towards the courtyard. A central spiral staircase and elevator enhance accessibility throughout. This thoughtful layout facilitates easy movement while maintaining privacy. By elevating the topic of abortion into public discussion, the facility not only destigmatises the practice but also fosters a supportive, community-centred space where individuals can openly and confidently navigate their reproductive health.
