Two Of Us
At Zürich’s busy Bucheggplatz, a once-overlooked site is reimagined as a space for visibility, connection, and care. The project responds to the lack of dedicated, welcoming places for queer women, especially those who are older or not publicly out, by reclaiming this urban void with both presence and intimacy.
Above ground, a visible structure raises awareness and invites public dialogue. Below, a quiet bar offers refuge, a protected, inclusive environment where women can meet and feel at ease.
The bar is set into the ground, accessed by a descending path that leads into a space unfolding beneath the surface. Inside, two split levels are connected by ramps, shaping movement and creating zones of gathering. Seating nooks line the ramps, each with curtains for privacy and comfort. A central bar counter bridges both levels, designed to support eye-level interactions for all guests, including those using wheelchairs.
Above, a small kiosk signals what lies below while serving commuters and hosting events. A gallery path spirals upward from a permanent queer history exhibition to temporary installations.
The open structure, made of platforms and ramps, offers continuous visual connection and a sense of lightness. Clad in solid and perforated metal, the building plays with contrast. A photovoltaic glass roof provides power, protection, and patterned shadows across the space.
